Summary

Summary translation

After two years experiments with thinning in apple (cultivar Elstar), research was conducted to the possible application of mechanical thinning in organic pear cultivation (cultivar Conference) in 2010 and 2011.
Research questions were:
- Is it possible to mechanically thin Conference pears using the 'Darwin' thinning device?
- What is the best time to do so?
- What are the optimal settings and how is the application of this machine?
- What immediate effects can be expected and what is their impact?
- How large are the ultimate effects on fruit size,-number, yield, flowering rate the following year and what are the bottlenecks?
The results of the mechanical thinning at the bud stage showed considerable damage to the leaves and to the number of flower clusters of the lower frame branches. As for the rest of the results, it seems that thinning quite quickly cause too much damage. When thinning in the green bud phase, a portion of the buds is damaged and will not develop. However, after adjustments we achieved thinning rates that were easily around 40%. Thinning pears indeed causes less pieces of fruit with increased fruit size, but finally decreases yield. The best treatment was 8 km/h with 240 rotations per minute. Finally, the effect on flowering numbers of trees a year later was very small, and not comparable to that in biennial bearing sensitive apple varieties.
