Summary

Summary translation

The project extension mainly aimed to validate the results from previous experiments (project: FKZ 06OE354) with respect to the application of biological control agents (BCAs) against grey mould (Botrytis cinerea) and powdery mildew (Podosphaera aphanis) in organically grown strawberries and, furthermore, to investigate the integration of BCAs in the disease control of conventionally grown strawberries.
The efficacy of the BCAs RhizoVital®42 fl. (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens), BoniProtect®forte (Aureobasidium pullulans) and Naturalis® (Beauveria bassiana) against B. cinerea was investigated in a field experiment (2012). The results of this experiment, though, did not confirm the promising results observed in the field experiment of the previous project FKZ 06OE354. Viable count results imply that A. pullulans did not establish in the strawberry phyllosphere in 2012, which most probably explain the different results observed in this field experiment.
Furthermore, a field experiment regarding the efficacy of selected BCAs- and BCAcombinations as well as of additional BCA-treatments after a series of fungicide applications against B. cinerea was performed. In this experiment, none of the BCAs (RhizoVital®42 fl. and BoniProtect®forte) effectively controlled B. cinerea. The control of B. cinerea was, therefore, also not improved when BCAs were additionally applied after a series of fungicides. Results of the viable counts indicate that B. amyloliquefaciens established in the strawberry phyllosphere in this year, whereas A. pullulans did not. Negative effects of the tested fungicides on the establishment of the BCAs used could not be detected in this field experiment.
The performance of 454 pyrosequencing provided useful insights into the composition of microbial communities in the phyllosphere of strawberries. Moreover, it could be shown that fungal communities can be affected by applications of the tested BCAs and fungicides.
