Summary
O comportamento de vacas leiteiras pode ser influenciado pela natureza do tratamento que recebem dos humanos. Neste trabalho foram comparados 20 estabelecimentos de agricultores familiares que usavam terapia convencional (n=11) ou homeopática (n=9) como principal terapêutica em rebanhos leiteiros. Foram feitas entrevistas com os agricultores, medidas de comportamento humano (como nomear e falar com os animais, contatos positivos ou negativos, condução para a sala de ordenha), e de comportamento animal. Foram encontrados escores de comportamento humano similares entre os dois grupos. A média de distância de fuga foi menor nos rebanhos sob uso de homeopatia do que no convencional (P=0,04). Nos 9 estabelecimentos homeopáticos o medicamento era colocado na ração, reduzindo a freqüência de manejos aversivos, o que pode ter influenciado o comportamento dos animais. A semelhança entre os dois grupos sugere que há um padrão de rotina de manejo, onde predominam os comportamentos neutros e positivos dos manejadores, o que pode refletir em atitudes geralmente positivas em relação aos animais. As diferenças no comportamento dos animais observadas neste estudo podem, portanto, ser explicadas principalmente pela forma de administração dos medicamentos, que possivelmente reduzem de uma forma geral a ocorrência de interações negativas entre manejadores e animais.
Summary translation
The behaviour of dairy cows can be influenced by the nature of the treatment they receive from humans. Twenty small farms that produced milk on a pasture system in South Brazil, and used conventional (n=11) or homeopathic therapeutic methods (n=9) for 1 to 8 years, were compared. Interviews with the farmers, measures of human behaviour (like frequency of naming and speaking to the animals, positive and negative contacts, tying up animals for milking), and cow’s behaviour, were performed. Similar scores for negative and positive human behavior were found in both groups. The mean flight distance of the cows was smaller in the farms that used homeopathic than conventional treatments (P=0,04). All 9 farms dispensed the homeopathic medicines in the animal’s feed, thus reducing the frequency of aversive handling. The behaviour of the animals and of the humans in both groups suggests that routine interactions were mostly positive or neutral. This may reflect the generally positive farmers’ attitudes regarding the animals and the dairy activity in both groups. The differences observed in this study may be explained mainly by the form of administration of medicaments, that possibly reduce the occurrence of negative interactions between animals and handlers.
