Summary
Die Biologische Bundesanstalt für Land- und Forstwirtschaft (BBA) ist eine Bundesforschungsanstalt und selbständige Bundesoberbehörde mit Sitz in Berlin und Braunschweig. Sie gehört zum Geschäftsbereich des Bundesministeriums für Verbraucherschutz, Ernährung und Landwirtschaft (BMVEL). Sitz des Präsidenten und der Verwaltung ist Braunschweig.
Die BBA verfügt über rund 670 feste Stellen, davon 170 Wissenschaftler/innen, in Braunschweig, Berlin und Kleinmachnow sowie den Außeninstituten Bernkastel-Kues, Darmstadt, Dossenheim und Münster.
Die BBA ist seit 100 Jahren auf dem Gesamtgebiet des Schutzes der Pflanzen und des Naturhaushaltes tätig. Eine Hauptaufgabe der BBA ist es, die Bundesregierung bzw. das BMVEL zu Fragen des Pflanzenschutzes, der Pflanzengesundheit und der biologischen Sicherheit zu beraten.
Aufgrund der kontinuierliche Ausweitung des Ökologischen Landbaus hat die BBA seit 1998 einen Schwerpunkt ihrer Arbeit auf den Pflanzenschutz im Ökolandbau gelegt. Durch intensive Zusammenarbeit sowohl mit den ökologischen Anbauverbänden, dem Beratungsdienst der Länder und mit anderen wissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen leistet sie einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Lösung der Pflanzenschutzprobleme im Ökologischen Landbau.

The Federal Biological Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (BBA) is engaged in plant pathology, entomology, plant protection and related fields. The BBA concerns itself with the effect of pesticides on humans, animals and the environment. The German Plant Protection Act defines the majority of its duties.
The BBA was founded 100 years ago in Berlin, whereas nowadays its headquarters, the president and the administration are situated in Brunswick (Braunschweig).
The staff of 700 permanent employees includes about 200 scientists in addition to 200 employees working on short term contracts.
It is one of the BBA's main tasks to advise the Federal Government and the Federal Ministry of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture (BMVEL) on problems of plant protection, plant health and biological safety. As organic farming is gaining ground in German agriculture, the BBA has made plant protection in ecological farming one of its major research activities since 1998. It makes an important contribution to solving crop protection problems in ecological farming by intensive cooperation with ecological farmers' associations, with the extension services of the federal states, and with other scientific institutions.
