Summary

Summary translation

The conversion of conventional apple farms to organic apple production is an investment. At the beginning the purchase of new machines and often also the replacement of existing varieties is necessary. Organic production causes higher costs at the beginning which can only be compensated by higher apple prices three years after conversion when the products can be sold on the market for organic products. A survey among organic apple producers showed the existence of intensively managed farms which realise gross margins of nearly 7.500 €/ha. This is more than twice the gross margin of low input farms. Complimentary model calculations have been conducted to assess the rentability of converting to organic production. The calculations show that given a price of 0,67 € per kg and a yield of 16 t/ha conversion is economically viable. Slight reductions in prices or yield however question the profitability of the investment.
