Summary

Summary translation

The purpose of the present study was to test the suitability and rentability of Spirulina platensis (S. p.) as protein source in organic feed for broiler chickens.
The experiment was carried out at the facilities of the University of Applied Sciences Weihenstephan-Triesdorf. A total of 720 one-day-old male and female broiler chicks (genotype ISA J 957) were raised according to the EU-organic regulations.
The whole experimental period was divided into two phases: a rearing period (1 to 28 d, in an environmentally controlled non-mobile house), and a fattening period (29 to 56 d, in mobile houses with outdoor access). The birds were evenly distributed among four feeding groups (control, trial 1, trial 2 and trial 3). Trial group 1 received a mixture of 2.5% S. p. (rearing) and 1.25% S. p. (fattening), group 2 5% S. p. (rearing) and 2.5% S. p. (fattening), and group 3 received the Spirulina product only in the rearing period (5% S. p. from 1 to 14 d and 2.5% from 15 to 28 d).
The Spirulina mixtures used in this study were consumed without problems. No differences could be identified in the state of health between the groups. The growth and carcass performance results showed a linear effect: the higher the consumed Spirulina amount (control: 0 g; trial 3: 39 g; trial 1: 76 g; trial 2: 153 g per animal in the starter and fattening period), the better the carcass weights and yield. Increased partial piece weights (breast and thigh) in the carcass were associated with it, too. The color of the breast muscle was subject to a visible effect of Spirulina feeding.
Due to the high cost of the product Spirulina platensis, the economics of broiler must worsens - despite improved fattening and carcass performance. Thus, a use of this protein source is recommended only for the 1st phase of rearing (1 to 14 d).
