Summary

Summary translation

The application of pheromones in agricultural plant protection seeking disrupting chemical communication of insect pests is a sustainable alternative to the use of synthetic pesticides. Its main advantages are the species specific behavioural impact of insect pheromones to and no formation of resistance in the target organisms. Actual limitations in current dispenser techniques are shortcomings in predictable release rates and mechanized application, or in their combination. They prevent the application of the mating disruption technique to a wider range of insect pests (e.g. the billion-dollar-beetle Diabrotica virgifera virgifera). Biodegradable, organic nanofibers used in our study were made by electrospinning and were charged with the insect sex pheromone during the electrospinning process itself. Such nano–pheromone–dispensers are an innovative approach with a considerable potential to overcome some present limitations of the confusion method. Here we present evidence for the principle efficiency of electrospun nanofibers for mating disruption purposes, using the example of Lobesia botrana in vine. In semi–field cage tests we found within three weeks a highly significant increase in mating disruption effect compared to the untreated control, and no difference to the treatment with the most effective commercially available pheromone dispenser. In contrast to this established dispenser type our nano–pheromone–dispenser can be principally distributed in the field by mechanical means. This is the key demand for the commercial implementation of the mating disruption technique in other (annual) crops (e.g. maize). Modifications of the fibers, currently under development, open up the possibility of extending the disruption effect to a period of several months’ duration and will lead to nanofibers distributed by direct electrospinning in the field. The results presented here are one new step on the way to a sustainable food production strategy with minimal or no input of synthetic pesticides.
