Summary

Summary
Strategy consultancy regarding diversification, specialisation and cooperation in organic farming
The research project aims to provide farmers and farm managers with tools to facilitate decisions on farm development strategies – either towards specialisation or diversification – and to help them to successfully handle the respective challenges in farm management. Due to the complex topic face-to-face interviews were conducted. By means of a partially standardised questionnaire the development of 40 economically successful organic farms was surveyed. Based on their recent development four different types of strategies could be identified: the typical diversifier, the partial diversifier, the concentrating/integrating farmers as well as the specialised farmers. In almost all farms a high level of added value was achieved either by integrating processing and/or marketing activities or via primary production of high value crops such as potatoes and field vegetables. The empirical study focussed on the influence of the farmer’s personality on farm development. The application of 'DISG' personality profiles showed clear relations between the behaviour type of the profile and the strategic orientation of the farm in an explorative way.
In the second phase of the research the project team developed a kit of tools for new strategic consulting. Complementing the DISG personality profile it also contains other new methodical elements. In the subsequent testing phase the new concept with its different tools was tested on eight farm in the process of reorientation. In a real participatory approach involving farmers, advisors and scientists the concept was adjusted and improved and is now ready for practical application.
