Summary
The objective of this study was to assess effects on intramammary infections and
somatic cell score (SCS) upon reduction antibiotic udder treatments. The study was
part of an udder health programme (pro-Q) implementing preventive measures and
complementary treatment methods. The treatment proportion decreased from annually
39 to 20 per 100 cows. A total of 10'000 of quarter milk samples out of 4 yearly investigations
of 33 Swiss dairy herds were analysed .There was no general change in
somatic cell score (SCS) considering all taken samples. A significant increase of
Staphylococcus ssp. findings (12%) could be observed beside a decrease of the SCS
in samples of this pathogens group. Using GLM statistical analysis, significant effects
by lactation number, days in milk, pathogens and farm on SCS could be shown.
